Low Impact Land Management

Charcoal ImagesCeffylau Gwaith Carnog Working Horses, run by Barbara Haddrill, is based in Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant in the heart of the Tanat Valley in Powys, Wales. It works in mid and North Wales, Shropshire and the Welsh Borders and Marches. We also work regularly in Devon and have gone as far as Lincolnshire, so no job is too far away.

Since we started Carnog in 2009, we have built up a range of skills and experience working in all aspect of land management.  Our main work is sensitive woodland management using horses as the power source for extracting the timber; this is known as Horselogging.  We can often find solutions where others fail and will always work with the woodland owner to advise them and find the right solution for their woodland.  We can carry out all aspects of felling and extraction work and our work ethos is always to be considerate and hardworking in every wood we are given the chance to manage.  Details of previous experience can be provided on request as well as references.

This video shows us working on the restoration of ancient woodland in North Wales pulling out small and medium conifers on very wet ground where there are lots of ditches to jump.

We also carry out work in grassland and other habitats such as heathlands and wetlands, and particularly bracken control and harrowing.  Please see our page for more details about our Bracken Control work.  Harrowing using horses is a great way to manage pony paddocks or other small areas of grassland and we can give advice on grassland management, especially for horse owners.  Please see our page for more details on Harrowing

At the heart of Carnog Working Horses is the desire to manage the land in a sensitive ecological and cost-effective manner. Maintaining rural skills and heritage is also important to us and we believe there is an art to horselogging and this knowledge should be valued and not lost.  For us it is also a desire to be able to live and work in a beautiful rural area.

Tyler and BluebellOur team currently consists of Tyler, who has been with Carnog from the start, Molly, a ten year old, who joined us in 2017, and Bluebell who is eight and joined us in 2021.  To see a short video by FEI TV, which introduces you to the team and our work, filmed recently when working in the Celtic Rainforest, click on this picture of Tyler (left) and Molly (right) (Photo: Keith Phillips).  The horses will work separately and also come together as a pair when we need more horsepower! Other horses and equipment can be brought into the team as required by larger contracts.

Carnog Working Horses also offers Training and Demonstration in working with horses. More information on the Equipment and Horses is available.

Carnog Working Horses prefer to work within an easy travel distance of home, but we are willing to travel much further, especially if a number of days of work are required.

Please look through the website for more information about the scope of horse-power.
